The rounded wings have reddish primaries. The long tail is graduated with brown central rectrices tipped in black; the remainder are black and broadly tipped with white. It has a yellow orbital ring.

The striking black-and ... and white tips to both its tertials and tail. Also note that some female scarlets show pale wing bars, but female westerns usually show a yellow upper bar.
