After 2 1/2 years of uneven neutrality, the United States entered the first World War on April 6, 1917. Henry dutifully registered for the draft on Aug. 3, 1917, well ahead of the Alaska deadline.
However, the neighboring city of Columbus, Mississippi, conducted its memorial observance one day earlier on April 25, 1866, giving them the distinction of hosting the first formal Memorial Day event.
The idea for the memorial came from former pupil and Royal Marine Jason Cox [BBC] Founded in 1887, the school lost 112 pupils in the First World War and 68 in the Second World War.
