Some Democrats expressed opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act on the House floor Thursday. Only four of them voted in support of the legislation.
House Speaker Mike Johnson successfully stopped an effort by fellow Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna to allow new parents in Congress to vote remotely. But her House Democratic partners made clear Tuesday that they still want that vote — even if it’s now symbolic.
On Tuesday, nine Republicans joined all Democrats in a 222–206 vote defeating Johnson's procedural rule, which would have blocked Luna from forcing action on the proxy voting proposal. Trump said he was "in favor" of allowing new parents in Congress to vote by proxy while speaking aboard Air Force One on Thursday.
