The track and field state championships get underway on Friday for the Class 6A, 5A and 4A schools at Hayward Field in Eugene. Here’s a quick preview of the Class 6A track and field state championships: Boys: 3 to Watch 100 Two of the state’s all-time best sprinters square off for the fourth time this spring.

Friday brought sunshine and speed, with freshman Taylor Rechkemmer kicking off the day in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing 21st, and sophomore Maddi Lucas placing 20th in the 400-meter hurdles — both competing in their first solo state events.

Nineteen MU athletes are competing in the NCAA West Regional from Wednesday to Saturday. To qualify for the regional, athletes must rank in the top 48 in an event in the East or West region. The top-12 finishes in each event at the regional will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, slated for June 11-14 in Eugene.
