Some 500,000 Americans crossed South Pass between 1840 and 1870 on their way to Oregon, California and Utah. South Pass was “the gateway to a continent,” writes Utah historian Will Bagley.
South Pass City was the first territory or state to sign such a bill in December of 1869. In 1968, a group purchased the town site and donated it to the state of Wyoming.
