The 5.2 quake was centered near Julian. There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries but some residents reported feeling a strong jolt.

The quake struck 8.3 miles deep near the Elsinore fault zone, one of the busiest seismic areas in California and part of the famous San Andreas fault system .

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 hit Southern California on Monday morning. Experts with the Seismological Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology said the quake was recorded at 10:08 a.m. PT near Julian, California.
