Pellet slug and snail baits are the most commonly used option due to their longevity, but pellets are primarily made up of wheat, which attract birds, squirrels, chipmunks, dogs, and other animals.
The state will treat properties in the area with a molluscicide (snail bait) 26 times, followed by several surveys — including one performed by a dog specially trained to detect the snails.
The appearance of the snails caused the state’s agriculture department to place parts of the second-largest county in Florida in quarantine, making it illegal to move the animals.
Authorities are hopeful they can control it, as they have developed a poisonous bait that the snails like but other natural animals don’t like. It will be a long battle though.
