New York City public schools are moving one step closer to meeting a state mandate to have smaller class sizes.

Mayor Eric Adams has included funding for a massive teacher hiring spree in his 2026 Executive Budget. New York City schools were previously asked to submit proposals to meet reduced class size requirements.

Mayor Eric Adams unveiled a plan to hire over 3,700 new teachers across the New York City public school system. The move supports the city's attempt to comply with a state requirement to reduce class sizes.

The Trump administration canceled $188 million in federal grants meant to reimburse New York City for sheltering migrants, saying the money was being spent to support illegal immigration and leading the city's mayor to vow to fight the clawback.

Federal officials informed New York City that three previously issued grants were inconsistent with President Trump’s agenda. Mayor Eric Adams said the city would sue.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency plans to revoke more than $180 million in grants from New York City, claiming the city’s program for sheltering migrants “is not consistent” with Department of Homeland Security policies.
