This recipe, adapted from “Jasper White’s Cooking From New England” (Harper & Row: 1989), may well be the ultimate American baked bean dish, just sweet enough from the molasses and maple sugar.

Combine maple syrup, mustards and cayenne in small bowl. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil; arrange beans on baking sheet. Drizzle with oil; using hands, toss to coat evenly.
