This bizarre border puzzle was finally resolved in 2015, granting tens of thousands of stateless residents a choice of citizenship. In Europe, we look at Spain’s exclaves: Llívia, a Spanish town ...
As such, Llívia remained a Spanish enclave within France and did not become part of the Kingdom of France. This situation was confirmed in the subsequent Treaty of Llívia, signed in 1660.
Llívia is about eight square miles in area, almost seven times bigger than Monaco, and centred on a town of 1,000 people. Like Gibraltar, it is a historical anomaly.
Llívia exists happily within France, but there have been episodes of tension. Senior figures in the town claim the treaty stipulated there must be a direct and unimpeded connection with Spain.
