Lampedusa has seen an influx of migrants with 7,000 people arriving in two days, prompting its mayor and the United Nations refugee agency to warn the Italian island is becoming overwhelmed.

Lampedusa’s mayor said on Sept. 14, 2023, that 7,000 migrants had arrived in 48 hours. But it is wrong to say the same number of migrants arrived on the island between March 23-25, 2024.

Fifteen boats packed with hundreds of migrants landed on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa on Sunday, and officials said they were expecting numbers to increase as the weather improved.
