There’s little ideal about “Redwood,” a wholly unsurprising new tree-hugging musical (and I mean that literally), written and directed by Tina Landau, with songs composed by Kate Diaz and

“Redwood” gave me a renewed appreciation for “Into the Woods” and its composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim. His show has the same themes, and the song “No One Is Alone,” softly sung by Cinderella, is a wise meditation on loss among the leaves that goes straight for the soul.

Menzel has plenty to give. She could be the greatest squandered resource on Broadway in decades, which makes this well-intentioned misfire more frustrating: they are literally hanging Menzel out to dry.
