Teams are able to fill roles and gain a better understanding of where their respective rosters sit prior to the draft, which allows them to best devise a strategy to attack those remaining needs.  For example,

Shedeur Sanders will not be a top-10 pick in the 2025 NFL draft. The Chicago Bears passed on Sanders to draft Michigan tight end Colston Loveland with the No. 10 pick, sending the former Colorado quarterback slipping down Round 1 draft boards on Thursday night in Green Bay.

The Shedeur Sanders draft slide has begun. The Giants passed on Sanders with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Saints followed suit at No. 9 and then — perhaps most surprising of all — the Steelers went in a different direction at No. 21.
