ZURICH (Reuters) -England defender Jess Carter said she has been the target of online racist abuse since Euro 2025 began in Switzerland, and announced on Sunday that she is stepping away from social media for the duration of the tournament.

In a collective decision, the Lionesses have resolved not to "take the knee" before the kick-off in Geneva, a gesture against racism that gained prominence after NFL star Colin Kaepernick knelt during the US national anthem in 2016 and has since been adopted widely in sports.

The player was the first to report the abuse she was suffering at the Euros. The FA, NWSL, and Gotham have joined the complaint.
