The Egg McMuffin, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, is, of course, a work of genius. It was invented in 1971 by a man named Herb Peterson, a franchisee in Santa Barbara.

The Egg McMuffin "began as the powerful vision of one franchisee in Santa Barbara, California," the chain stated, adding that Herb Peterson presented the idea to the company's founder, Ray Kroc.
