After a 38-foot-long female gray whale washed ashore at Dockweiler Beach, scientists look for a cause of death: 'Each mortality has a story to tell.'

Wildlife officials have launched an investigation after a dead gray whale washed ashore on Dockweiler State Beach on Sunday. According to John Warner, CEO of the Marine Mammal Care Center, the whale was located near Lifeguard Tower 50.

The 39-foot gray whale carcass was discovered floating off Marina del Rey on Saturday with most of its head missing.
