Screenwriter William Bast, who co-created the nighttime TV soap opera "The Colbys" in the 1980s and wrote for numerous other shows, died May 4 at a care facility in Los Angeles.

William Bast, an Emmy-nominated screenwriter for film and television who co-created The Colbys, a spinoff of ABC’s popular primetime soap Dynasty, has died. He was 84.

Christopher Bast Sr., Bast's husband of 45 years, said his wife's contributions to the company, as accountant, office manager and project manager among other duties, were greater than his own.

William Bast, who wrote extensively for both film and TV and was also known for his two biographies of James Dean, died of complications from Alzheimer’s on May 4. He was 84.
