Several areas around Midland reported feeling the earthquake, as did some parts of Southern New Mexico, including Roswell, Carlsbad and Alamogordo. The earthquake happened at 12:33 MT/1:33 CT, on Friday, Feb. 28, about 16 miles southwest of Ackerly, Texas, according to the United States Geological Survey.

At 1:33 p.m., a 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit southwest of Ackerly. USGS said it was 4.2 miles in depth. A second earthquake with a magnitude of 2.6 was located south, southeast of Ackerly. This occurred at 3:47 p.m. and was 2.6 miles in depth, USGS reports.

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook a wide swath of of West Texas on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake struck around 1:30 p.m. local time about 16 miles southwest of Ackerly and about 27 miles northeast of Midland.
