New York City’s congestion pricing is the first of its kind in the United States. Yet congestion pricing has been implemented in cities across the globe for decades, including in Singapore since the 1970s, London since 2003 and Stockholm since 2007 .

Manhattan commuters are already marveling at what appears to be less traffic — and grousing about the new $9 tolls.

While commercial trucks entering Manhattan will be charged depending on the truck size and time of day, there are workarounds.

Manhattan's Congestion Relief Zone starts at 60th Street and heads south to include the Lincoln, Holland and Hugh L. Carey tunnels on the Hudson River side, and the Queensboro Bridge, Queens Midtown Tunnel, Williamsburg Bridge, Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge on the East Side.

Monday marked the first weekday that thousands of drivers in New York paid congestion price fees when entering parts of Manhattan. Passenger vehicles will now pay as much as $9 to drive past 60th Street during peak hours.

Driving into Manhattan's core will cost you more as of 2025 — but thanks to riding advocates, motorcycling remains comparatively affordable.
