The U.S. Senate confirmed Marty Makary as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration mostly along party lines on Tuesday night.

Both agencies are part of the Department of Health and Human Services, which like much of the federal government, has seen mass layoffs as part of the Trump administration's ongoing efforts to implement budget cuts.

Marty Makary, at FDA, and Jay Bhattacharya, at NIH, are assuming leadership of agencies pummeled by workforce cuts and sagging morale.
