Porsche is testing an electric prototype of the 718 Cayman, scheduled for 2026, while the electric 718 Boxster will precede it in 2025.

Porsche is close to launching its first electric sports car, but rather than start with the iconic 911, Porsche will initially add battery power to the 718 Boxster and Cayman. A prototype for the electric Cayman has now been spotted for the first time.

Whether the motoring world is ready or not, the electric Porsche Cayman is well on its way to production. In fact, the next-gen Cayman is far enough along on its march toward production that our spy photographers caught sight of a test model without any camouflage.

The 718 family’s internal combustion-driven models were scheduled to be phased out in summer 2025 and replaced by electric versions of the sports cars, according to the Automotive News Future Product Pipeline. That target is in doubt, according to Automobilwoche.

It leaves the battery-powered Porsche 718 in a strange situation, because once upon a time it was meant to be arriving this year. And these latest pictures, showing a car that looks sort of half Taycan and half 911,

Porsche first introduced us to the idea of an electric 718 with the 2021 Mission R, a concept racecar that hinted at the next Cayman road car. But for the past three years the only 718 EV prototypes spied testing have been those of the Boxster. Today we finally get a look at its Cayman coupe brother.
