If you are traveling from a cruise ship, you will find tour operators who offer to take you to the beach on their way to canyon river and pick you up on their way back. Unless you are already in the port town (puerto Barrios) and the water taxis offer to take you across the bay for cheap. That was my past experience around 9 years ago.
