Roden is a town in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is located in the municipality of Noordenveld, about 16 km southwest of Groningen. The village was first mentioned in 1139 as Rothen, and means "settlement near a clearing in the forest". Roden is an esdorp which developed in the Early Middle Ages. It has a large brink near the church and a double triangular brink around what is nowadays called Julianaplein.
