A lovely day trip that really captures the rainforest. Took the train up and the Skyrail down. Plenty of opportunity to slow down and enjoy the rainforest and some entertainment in kuranda.Full review by X2591CRdylang

Great day out. A must do. Skyrail up the tablelands, lunch and beer in Kuranda and train back down to Cairns. Plenty of things to do and see.Full review by TheGabsterNZ

It tends to be very busy mid afternoon as many travel on the Queensland Rail Kuranda Tourist Train to Kuranda, but return on the Skyrail. You don't say if your flight is international or domestic, but I'd want to be on the Skyrail by2pm if yours is an international flight and 3.30pm if a domestic flight, assuming that you have your luggage with you and there's no major deviation required to a hotel prior to arriving at the airport.
What regular transport is available from Smithfield Terminal parking lot to Freshwater Station? Cost per person?

Not sure. I know there is a free bus service from Smithfield to central station and I recall it stops at Freshwater as well. It is free with your train ticket
