Not really. There were plenty of 2wd cards that made it to the trail head. That said it was dry and not muddy when we went...but there is plenty of gravel for traction if it were wet/muddy. A few washouts along the way but you can easily navigate around them. I personally wouldn't hesitate to do it with 2WD. It was a fun, moderately exciting, and beautiful drive.
